JARVENPAA (pop. 17,500) is a important port city on the south of Drow Elf-occupied Syllabus Island. It is known for its necromantic research center, fine craftsmanship in metals and stone, and its delightful cuisine. Jaarvenpaa was founded in 9640, following the exile of the drow elves in the Elvish Uncivil War. Residents of Jaarvenpaa are called Jaarvenpites.

JACKET, DUNCAN (9650-9708) was a Mickelgarth citizen who moved to the young town of Malmo in 9655 after his father, Robert, was accused of malfeasance in the service of the government. He was raised in an atmosphere of frontier adventure and constant warfare against the orcish inhabitants of the region. In the end, Duncan made his name at the head of band of warriors (including, according to some accounts, a substantial number of gypsy elves) who conquered the orcish town of Corium. They razed the town and, with the help of Pavimentum soldiers, founded the present-day city of Jacketz, laying the first blocks of its Ruddy Wall in 9750. Duncan died of pneumonia in 9708, leaving behind two sons, Robert II and Duncan II, each of which went on to have prominent careers in the service of their city; neither, however, left behind any children. In his own time, Duncan was notorious for his recklessness, vision, flawless memory, and--less positively--his adultery, which was often said to extend to elvish prostitutes and mistresses.

JACKETZ (pop. 65,000) is large port city in the province of Boatia in the Confederacy of Dun Cess. Jacketz is located on the finest set of natural harbors on the eastern side of the Confederacy and owes its phenomenal growth to this natural treasure. The population has almost tripled since the turn of the century with the growth of the Southern Expanse Trading Company (founded 9989) and associated merchant and industrial firms. Human occupation of Jacketz began in the 9600's; previously the land belonged to tribal orcs who were driven south by the southern advance of colonists. For a substantial part of the 8000's, the area was controlled by the Sea Elves as part of the of their (only) overseas empire. Unfortunately, the rapid expansion of the city destroyed any chance for serious study to be made of the elvish and orcish inhabitation.

The city proper is surrounded by a massive wall nearly 12 miles in length. The wall is known as the "Ruddy Wall," for its slight reddish tint--the result, some say, of the blood of the hundreds of dwarvish captives who died laboring to construct it. There are three gates, one on the southwest, one on the northwest, and one on the northeast. About 25,000 people live within the walls, while another 40,000 (approximately) make their homes in the farms and shops which encircle it. The biggest transvallic population lives outside the northeastern gate and along along the shore.

The city's primary industry is its docks, divided into the southern docks, the northern docks, and the outer docks. The last of which lie outside the city walls and are dominated by fishing vessels, small trade ships, and largely regulated commerce. The southern docks deal primarily with foodstuffs and textiles and powered almost completely by sweat and hustle. The northern docks are more advanced and pride themselves on the heavy machinery and steam engines available to move cargo from shipside to landside.

Jacketz is also home to Jacketz Ironworks, Principle Steelworks, Lennox Armaments, Berkeley Shipyards, and Darnton Wrights--all major companies which depend on the constant flow of raw materials brought by the Southern Expanse Trading Company to the city. Over 60% of the imports and 85% of the exports of Jacketz are carried by SETCo vessels.

Politically, Jacketz has dominated the surrounding countryside since the building of its castle by Duncan Jacket (the source of the "z" in the town name is unknown) in 9700. It was founded with the help of official forces from Mickelgarth, but the mercenary band led by Duncan acquired the upper hand, and Jacketz never professed more than salutary allegiance to Mickelgarth or the northern colonies. By 9710 it had declared itself an independent city-state, the equal of any in the old world.

Until the ascent of Dun Cess, it was the only substantial power in southern Ilico, fighting alternating with the retreating orcish armies of the south, the retreating dwarvish armies of the northeast, and the encroaching human armies of the northwest. In 9728-9730 Jacketz withstood a 32-month siege against human armies nominally allied Mickelgarth and her colonies. This success was primarily because Jacketz was able to rely on imported foodstuffs from its elvish allies. Throughout the 9800's, Jacketz fought continuously against the rising star of Dun Cess, being prominently besieged for 22 months in 9836-9837. It was during this constant warfare that the northern provinces, including Falwell and Thulia, were able to break away from the control of Dun Cess under the leadership of the Reynolds family of Malmo. Exhausted by the constant war with an implacable city and shown the evidence of their weakening hold over their own territory, the expansionist policies of Dun Cess were discarded and talk turned to the formation of a loose confederacy with dominant centers at Dun Cess, Neorome, Jacketz, and, to a lesser degree, Malmo. This was accomplished in 9886 to great ceremony. Within six years, the remaining regions joined the Confederacy under the supposed leadership of this or that "leading city" as it became obvious that the great powers were beginning to focus on lesser powers than themselves. The Confederacy proved surprising peaceful, if rarely cooperative. Jacketz maintains its own mint, but since 9945 has produced the same series of coins as Dun Cess.

During the Second War of Ilican Succession, Jacketz remained tied to Dun Cess and expanded its territory (or rather, Boatia) at the expense of the secessionist Chinmin, Agricolum, and Agnatic. Following the war, the Agnatic Province was dissolved and its rich timbered territory added to that of Boatia. In exchange, Jacketz' gains at the expense of Chinmin and Agricolum were repudiated. The primary effect was to lessen the political signifiance of Forsythia which had heretofore dominated the lumber towns of Agnatica.

In recent times, the municipal politics of the city have been dominated by two great families, the MacDuffs and the Leckenbies, each of which has enormous influence with the city's great industries, mobs, and dockworkers.

JACKSON BAY (pop. 14,500) is an important import/export center on the Bending Branch Bay. Jackson Bay, and its twin city, Slater, combine to export nearly 92% of the total lumber sent from the ponderous Bending Branch Forest. Jackson Bay is also the home city of the Bending Branch Rangers, the traditional police force of the forest, the prominent environmental group Bluepeace, and the largest lumber merchant company, Cobbett Timber.

JAMES OF FORSYTHIA (9990- ) was the head of the prestigious Order of the Carnation, in Forsythia from 10011 to 10016. He was appointed, right out of jail and squirehood, following a "quantitative and qualitative personnel deterioration." He handed over control of the order to a papal appointee, Cleomenes, in 10016 and was killed shortly thereafter on a mission from God. He supposedly performed miracles, including ressurection, but his beatification was stalled when the Order was burned to the ground in 10016 and the only witness, Guanerius Guaneri, disappeared. In 10020 there was a supposed sighting of Sir James in Mickelgarth in the downtown area. The vision was not confirmed, but public sentiment convinced the architects of the new library to name their edifice the James of Forsythia Memorial Library.

JECTION, SIR ONTO (9985- ) is the current head of the Order of the Petunia in Gravesend.

JERNE, VULES (9790-c. 9840) was an renowned explorer and imaginative author of travel books to places both real and fictional. He grew up near the Ilion Mountains on Pavimentum and could always be found climbing and hiking when household chores were finished. Upon completion of his apprenticeship as a blacksmith, he left to seek his fortune in Mickelgarth. He was unsuited to the city life, however, and soon left the staid guild and sought employment in Uchebnik. He supplmented his income by rooting out valuable plants in the forest leading to the offering of a commission to map the westernmost section from MCSU archaeologists. Jerne disappeared from this task in 9712 and was presumed dead by those few who cared until he returned in 9718 from the forests of Vyrica. He spent the next eighteen years travelling the world alone, except for the first two during which he was accompanied by Alicia Ricdonnell. It was likely her death--due to consumption of unpasteurized water--which prompted Jerne to travel alone. He submitted his first manuscript, ~Around the World in Two and Two-Thirds Months~ anonymously, but its success encouraged him to set accounts of the rest of his travels in writing. He followed these books with two others, ~The Other Side of the World~ and ~Beyond the Rimey Peaks~, fictional tales of travels in a "world beneath and inverted to our own" and in a virgin land across the glacial expanse. He disappeared again in 9840 and was presumed dead shortly thereafter. His works lost popularity as his style and knowledge became dated. They are no longer printed and copies are extremely rare. One fifth printing recently fetched 65,000 silver pieces at an auction in Delmaruntha (10032).

JINJA is a semi-legendary shrine of the Sudibin people. It is said to have been built at the request of Emperor Masatoshi some 4,000 years ago who forbid that its actual location be revealed to the public. Only the Emperor, the priesthood, and a very few others would know how to get there; a prerequisite for attendance was extensive training to allow supplicants to travel without need for guides. Masatoshi's successor, Nariaki, supposedly created an order of holy assassins whose sole job was to safeguard the secrets of Jinja, the most important of which was the location of the actual shrine itself.

Stories about Jinja abound, ranging from the tame in which a new Emperor would return from his first visit to Jinja a shaken and newly devout man, to the lurid, detailing the abduction of women to bear sons who would become the next generation of priests. Versions differ as to the point at which the women would be slain following delivery; one variant supposes that they sacreligiously donned the garb of men and became priests themselves. Another popular story is that the famous swordsman and poet Yoshinobu's famed 24th book was left unfinished precisely because he had discovered Jinja and was preparing to end his autobiography with the news. Since his body was never discovered, it was easy to attribute his death to the hands of the feverish assassins of Jinja.

Jinja figures prominently in the mythology, art, and literature of the Sudibin; an example is the often-reproduced fantasy on its appearance seen in this encyclopedia. This work is attributed to the master Okakura, though many scholars question this attribution.

While there may have existed a shrine like Jinja at one time, possibly even under the secrecy ascribed to it, it seems unlikely that such a place could continue to be unknown to the mass of Sudibin people, much less the outside world, for 4,000 years. Nevertheless, even in modern times, Sudibin priests speak of going to Jinja in words that cannot be interpreted as metaphorical. From time to time, intrepid groups have set off to discover this ancient place; of those that have returned, none has reported success.

JITSUTARO dynasty was the Imperial House of the Sudibin from 9723 until 9908.

JOHNATHAN THE RED (9762-9810) was a knight of the Universlist church who founded the Order of the Carnation in Forsythia in 9800 as a training ground for future servants of the Lord and as a service to a foundling community.
