NetHack

is a computer game. It uses almost every key on the keyboard, its graphics are letters and punctuation. Playing it, you might farm puddings, you might be told "the Terminator tinkles!", you might slay a wumpus, you might consider a metallivorous lifestyle. You will discover new ways to die, but probably not all of them. Best of all, it's free and open to modification by anyone. This page is where my modifications and other assorted NetHack things wind up.

Heck² Patch

Handmade levels to replace the Gehennom maze levels. There are 42 of them and 5-8 levels are used each game (and replace 38%-89% of the pure mazes). Some of the levels are more common than others, some are more mazelike, some may hold surprises.

Since the patch affects only gehennom.des and dungeon.def, the NetHack program itself is not changed (but note that only games started after the patch is installed will see the new levels). A Windows user can download the nhdat file and swap it out with their existing one. Other users can build only the levels or nhdat and swap these into existing builds.
    Downloads: Current version 1.1 2004/1/1
  • Windows nhdat file. Download and drop into your NetHack game directory (you might want to back up the nhdat file that is already there). Updated for nethack 3.4.3. The 3.4.2 version is here.
  • Patch file. Apply this patch if you compile yourself. I have tried to edit the various Makefiles so that everything works from a clean install, but I have not tested all systems. This patch is technically for 3.4.2 version.
Each level has been test-loaded more than 100 times, including loading with branch placement. A very spoily preview of the levels can be found linked to somewhere in this section. Please send whatever feedback you have to the address at the bottom of the page.

2003/10/22: Changed nhdat for tty #version fix.

Abigaba Tiles

A tileset made by my friend James Hogwood. Available (~900k .zips) for: These tiles of course might work on older or newer versions of the program, depending on when new tiles were added (SLASH'EM added quite a few new tiles in 7e2; NetHack has not changed its tiles in awhile). To use the NetHack tiles, save the file to your NetHack or SLASH'EM directory, and then modify the defaults file as following. For NetHack:
OPTIONS=tile_file:chozo32.bmp,tile_width:32,tile_height:32
SLASH'EM:
TILESET=name:chozo,file:Stiles24.bmp
OPTIONS=tiles:chozo
